ThinkCentre M70z: All-In-One Desktop PC From Lenovo Hits Japan

Lenovo is famous for its devices, and recently the PC maker has released an all-in-one PC especially for the Japanese market, so let’s have a closer look at it. This model is called the ThinkCentre M70z and it comes with a 19-inch 1440 x 900 display and a choice of processors.

List of available processors includes 3.06GHz Intel Core i5-650, 3.06GHz Intel Core i3-540 or 2.8GHz Intel Pentium G6950 processor. In addition, ThinkCentre M70z supports up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM which should be enough for most of users.

When it comes to storage space, this model uses 250GB or 350GB hard drive, a memory capacity which some users might find limiting. Just like many other all-in-one PCs on the market, the ThinkCentre M70z houses a two-megapixel webcam, DVD writer, Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi. As for the operating system, this model comes with Windows 7 Professional preinstalled.

Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 All-In-One Review

Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 is a all-in-one desktop that brings complete home entertainment features in an elegant compact package, it sports an angular design with machine cut speaker grills that are inspired from the Halo, the machine itself has a small footprint that allows for space saving and at the same time provides ample power for your computing and entertainment needs. We recently got our hands on the machine, lets have a look at the review results after the break.

Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 Hardware Specifications

  • 23” Full HD Widescreen Display
  • Intel Core2Duo E7500 2.93GHz
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M 1GB Graphics Card
  • 640GB Hard Drive
  • DVD Reader/Writer
  • JBL 2.0 Speakers, 2 x 5W RMS
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth
  • TV Tuner and Remote
  • Integrated Camera and Mic
  • 6-in-1 Card Reader, headphone and microphone jack
  • Ports: 6 USB 2.0, 1 RJ45, PS/2 and AV IN.

Design and Build Quality

IdeaCentre B500 sports a refreshing slim form factor for a desktop and has been designed keeping the modern lifestyles in mind. The build quality feels solid, the choice of colors and the metallic finish below the screen gives it a unique look. There are also six touch sensitive buttons at the bezel for LED light, volume, brightness and for turning off the display.

Card Reader, headphone and earphone jack along with two USB ports are conveniently placed at the left side of the bezel whereas the DVD Writer is on the right side, additional 4 USB ports, TV IN and Audio/Video ports are located behind the screen. The back stand is sturdy and at the same time allows for easily adjustable viewing angle.

Keyboard and Mouse

A set of wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with batteries is bundled with the machine. Mouse works out of the box but you have to manually pair the BT keyboard once by going to Control Panel –> “Add a New Device” insideWindows 7. The Keyboard itself is light weight, its metallic design matches well with the desktop and the build quality is very good, typing is smooth and because of soft key presses touch typing is a joy on it.

Gaming Performance

IdeaCentre B500 is powered by the NVIDIA  240M graphics card which allows it to perform fairly well in the gaming segment, however it wouldn’t please the hardcore gaming fans that said most of the current generation games can be enjoyed on its big screen at decent settings.

We played GRID 2 at 1080p for the test and it delivered the following results :

Game settings –  Average FPS

First run auto detect – 21.912

Low  –  42.588  (No AA)

Medium –  23.276 (2x AA)

Ultra  – 16.812 (4x AA)

The loading of the game was smooth and it was decently playable at medium settings.

Sound and Media Playback

Internal sound system is powered by high quality JBL speakers which provides nice all around sound for your music and movies needs, the loudness of these speakers is surprising given their small size, even at maximum volume the sound didn’t crack. These are just perfect for this kind of machine.

– HD Media Playback

B500 plays both 720p and 1080p media with ease, and because of its Full HD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio movies looks great, color reproduction is crisp however the black levels were a little on the lower side when compared to the IPS panels we have had access to. Media playback over Wi-Fi works well, we had no problem playing HD/Full HD movies over the Wi-Fi network.

TV Tuner and InfraRed Remote control

The machine we received for review came with a In-built TV Tuner and IR Remote Control using which you can control the Windows Media Center and some functions of the PC, you can even record live TV from the WMC using your remote to view later.

Operating System

The machine is powered by Windows 7 Home Premium which was optimized for enhanced performance by Lenovo, the startup and shutdown of the machine were a little faster but thats all about it. There were dual partition on the 640 GB hard drive, one 48.8 GB and the other with 522 GB, rest of the space was used by Windows 7 and for Lenovo Recovery.

Windows Experience Index gave it a score of 5.9.

  • Compact Stylish Design
  • Build Quality
  • Full HD Display
  • Great Computing and Multimedia Performance
  • Media Centre Remote
  • Lenovo Rescue System for Backup and Recovery
  • On-site 1 year warranty

Recommended: If you have the budget and are in the market for a stylish desktop that “Does It All” with good performance IdeaCentre B500 is for you.

Sony Ericsson Aino Mobile Handset

If you’re wondering what the name Aino(no apparent model number) means, your guess is as good as mine. It means different thing in diffrent Languages. In Finnish it can be a person’s name that means ‘The Only One’,in Japanese it’s the native name of ‘Man’ and a race of people that came before the earliest Japanese settlers. The handset is obviously neither. Sony Ericsson has stepped out of usual conformity of using model numbers for mobile handset and gone with just a name. As unique as the name may be, I was curious to see how unique the handset would turn out and here’s my experience in a nutshell.

Form Factor
Brilliant! The Aino’s is a well crafted handset. It’s well balanced and very streamlined and the weight, although a little on the heavy side, gives the handset a definite feel good factor. The pop slider lives up to the term. It’s very smooth and can be opened or closed with a simply flick. Volume/Zoom keys are on the same side as the shutte release for the handset’s 8MP camera (with LED flash). Sony’s proprietary USB slot is located on the other side. Sadly they didn’t think it relevant to have a 3.5mm socket; instead the Aino comes with a Bluetooth enabled receptor that can be hooked up to a wired set of earphones. The Aino comes with the new chargers that have a secondary proprietary port built in so one could use a wired headset while charging though one isn’t included with the phone. The Bluetooth Adapter for the handsfree can also be charged when it’s placed in the bundled cradle. The Aino uses microSD cards to increase memory capacity and comes with an 8GB card. The slot is unfortunately located under the rear panel, but thankfully that’s quite easy to pop open. The 3 inch display’s touch functionality can be accessed only in landscape mode for media. The resolution is 240 x 432 with 16million colors, but for some strange reason, I noticed, the resolution seemed a little askew in the media mode in terms of overall clarity. However I do like the idea of having the touchscreen specific to only one aspect of the handset’s overall feature set although that does have a small measure of disadvantage as well. Read on.

Features and Performance
Sony Ericsson’s UI has, sadly, remained unchanged. It’s always been colorful and very animated, which also leads to a burden on the battery. I found a little bit of lag in the Aino’s UI, even when I selected the least animated theme. Refreshing new data in the media section was also a bit slow. In contrast though, the touchscreen media UI was quite responsive and well laid out thus making it very user friendly.

While the handset does have an accelerometer to rotate web pages and the media gallery there’s no virtual keyboard as it does not activate the touch sensitive one so you’ll have to struggle to use the alphanumeric keypad in portrait mode. And there’s your disadvantage right there, since the browser can’t be accessed from the touch sensitive media menu.

Another disappointment is that the handset, although equipped with a GPS module only comes with apps like Wisepilot and Google Maps that are primarily A-GPS enabled so quite pointless if you have no reception. The Tracker application is quite handy for those who enjoy jogging or walking as recreation or sport.
