ThinkCentre M70z: All-In-One Desktop PC From Lenovo Hits Japan

Lenovo is famous for its devices, and recently the PC maker has released an all-in-one PC especially for the Japanese market, so let’s have a closer look at it. This model is called the ThinkCentre M70z and it comes with a 19-inch 1440 x 900 display and a choice of processors.

List of available processors includes 3.06GHz Intel Core i5-650, 3.06GHz Intel Core i3-540 or 2.8GHz Intel Pentium G6950 processor. In addition, ThinkCentre M70z supports up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM which should be enough for most of users.

When it comes to storage space, this model uses 250GB or 350GB hard drive, a memory capacity which some users might find limiting. Just like many other all-in-one PCs on the market, the ThinkCentre M70z houses a two-megapixel webcam, DVD writer, Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi. As for the operating system, this model comes with Windows 7 Professional preinstalled.

Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 All-In-One Review

Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 is a all-in-one desktop that brings complete home entertainment features in an elegant compact package, it sports an angular design with machine cut speaker grills that are inspired from the Halo, the machine itself has a small footprint that allows for space saving and at the same time provides ample power for your computing and entertainment needs. We recently got our hands on the machine, lets have a look at the review results after the break.

Lenovo IdeaCentre B500 Hardware Specifications

  • 23” Full HD Widescreen Display
  • Intel Core2Duo E7500 2.93GHz
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M 1GB Graphics Card
  • 640GB Hard Drive
  • DVD Reader/Writer
  • JBL 2.0 Speakers, 2 x 5W RMS
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth
  • TV Tuner and Remote
  • Integrated Camera and Mic
  • 6-in-1 Card Reader, headphone and microphone jack
  • Ports: 6 USB 2.0, 1 RJ45, PS/2 and AV IN.

Design and Build Quality

IdeaCentre B500 sports a refreshing slim form factor for a desktop and has been designed keeping the modern lifestyles in mind. The build quality feels solid, the choice of colors and the metallic finish below the screen gives it a unique look. There are also six touch sensitive buttons at the bezel for LED light, volume, brightness and for turning off the display.

Card Reader, headphone and earphone jack along with two USB ports are conveniently placed at the left side of the bezel whereas the DVD Writer is on the right side, additional 4 USB ports, TV IN and Audio/Video ports are located behind the screen. The back stand is sturdy and at the same time allows for easily adjustable viewing angle.

Keyboard and Mouse

A set of wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with batteries is bundled with the machine. Mouse works out of the box but you have to manually pair the BT keyboard once by going to Control Panel –> “Add a New Device” insideWindows 7. The Keyboard itself is light weight, its metallic design matches well with the desktop and the build quality is very good, typing is smooth and because of soft key presses touch typing is a joy on it.

Gaming Performance

IdeaCentre B500 is powered by the NVIDIA  240M graphics card which allows it to perform fairly well in the gaming segment, however it wouldn’t please the hardcore gaming fans that said most of the current generation games can be enjoyed on its big screen at decent settings.

We played GRID 2 at 1080p for the test and it delivered the following results :

Game settings –  Average FPS

First run auto detect – 21.912

Low  –  42.588  (No AA)

Medium –  23.276 (2x AA)

Ultra  – 16.812 (4x AA)

The loading of the game was smooth and it was decently playable at medium settings.

Sound and Media Playback

Internal sound system is powered by high quality JBL speakers which provides nice all around sound for your music and movies needs, the loudness of these speakers is surprising given their small size, even at maximum volume the sound didn’t crack. These are just perfect for this kind of machine.

– HD Media Playback

B500 plays both 720p and 1080p media with ease, and because of its Full HD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio movies looks great, color reproduction is crisp however the black levels were a little on the lower side when compared to the IPS panels we have had access to. Media playback over Wi-Fi works well, we had no problem playing HD/Full HD movies over the Wi-Fi network.

TV Tuner and InfraRed Remote control

The machine we received for review came with a In-built TV Tuner and IR Remote Control using which you can control the Windows Media Center and some functions of the PC, you can even record live TV from the WMC using your remote to view later.

Operating System

The machine is powered by Windows 7 Home Premium which was optimized for enhanced performance by Lenovo, the startup and shutdown of the machine were a little faster but thats all about it. There were dual partition on the 640 GB hard drive, one 48.8 GB and the other with 522 GB, rest of the space was used by Windows 7 and for Lenovo Recovery.

Windows Experience Index gave it a score of 5.9.

  • Compact Stylish Design
  • Build Quality
  • Full HD Display
  • Great Computing and Multimedia Performance
  • Media Centre Remote
  • Lenovo Rescue System for Backup and Recovery
  • On-site 1 year warranty

Recommended: If you have the budget and are in the market for a stylish desktop that “Does It All” with good performance IdeaCentre B500 is for you.

HP Shows Of Wall Of Touch- Touch Without Dirtying The Wall

HP Wall

We all love the feeling that comes with touching a screen to make it work. That is on of the reasons that touch devices have come so far. But don’ we all hate the smudges and fingerprints that we leave on the device? HP seems to have heard your woes, for it has launched HP “Wall-Of-Touch.”

We were a bit surprised to hear of this technology after CES 2010. HP skipped that reputed platform and recently unveiled their Wall-Of-touch to the Wall Street Journal. Though this technology is aimed at only big businesses and organizations, it has gained a lot of popularity. The Wall of Touch runs on HP’s Z800 workstation. The Wall of Touch is a gigantic wall of multiple touch screens. It has 9 touch screens, each 43 inches across have 1080p resolution. What differentiates it from other touch devices is that it is not much of a ‘touch’ device. It can detect the users’ gesture even when the user brings his hand close to the wall. It has built in cameras and a magnetic strip to detect the users’ intent before his touching the screen. This means that this is one wall which will never get dirty! You can forget the issue of smudges on this touch screen device thanks to HP’s unique concept.

For now this technology is only restricted to big businesses courtesy its $100,000 price tag. NBA, Edelman PR and Continental Airlines are the first companies which have bought the Wall of Touch. Continental Airlines has already installed the Wall of Touch at its terminal at the Houston Airport.  This device has a number of applications for everyone. It can be used for HD Video Conferencing, already making it a favorite for board rooms. Though its price tag is very steep, HP hinted at making it a mainstream product in the next couple of years. It plans to market it in different models, ranging from just small screens to the large Wall of Touch we have just seen. It will cater to the needs of all users and will have a price tag ranging from $2000-$100,000. Probably, we will have to wait for quite some time for it to become a main stream product in India.

Windows Mobile 7 Platform, Microsoft’s Last Hope, To Be Unveiled During Mobile World Congress?

The Windows Phone

The Mobile World Congress is fast approaching and all the mobile phone giants are gearing up to display their products in this popular event. All companies, be it hardware or software ones, are working hard to have a successful event.

This event is, maybe, much more important to Microsoft. If rumors are to be believed, Microsoft is coming up with its own phone- The Zune Phone. This phone has been making the rounds of many popular tech websites and blogs by the name of ‘Pink’  phone. This phone, if released at this event, will be the most interesting part to watch out for. What increases the importance of this phone is the fact that it is rumored to be running on the Windows 7 Mobile platform. Windows 7 Mobile is Microsoft’s last hope to survive the Mobile OS market which is fast being dominated by Android, iPhone, Symbian and WebOS. This launch will ensure that Microsoft will be the most nervous company in MWC’s lineup and certainly the most watched out for. The rumor of Windows Mobile 7 has perplexed people who were expecting the launch of Windows Mobile 6.6 at this Mobile World Congress. If the rumors are true, Microsoft may skip on Windows Mobile 6.6 completely or release it for the lower-end phones.
The Zune will have an integrated score feature “Music subscription/purchasing service”. It is also rumored to pack a 5 MP camera with 720p HD video recording. According to some reports, there are two versions of Windows Mobile 7- The Business Edition and the Media Edition. If the same report is to be believed, the Zune Phone will have the Windows Mobile 7 Media Edition.
As the anticipation increases, we must remember that these are, above all, rumors. For all we know, this might turn out to be another cell phone rumor and a great disappointment to Microsoft fans.
